This volume of two novelettes by the legendary Ibn-e Safi features the eccentric (and hilariously effective) detective, spy, and secret agent, Ali Imran. Despite a translation into English (from Urdu) that is also, at times, eccentric, both stories move along nicely and elicit a proverbial barrel of laughs. Imran's character is drawn fabulously. The supporting cast of befuddled "straight" men and women is more than adequate. The only problem for an English-speaker such as me is that there appears to be a dismaying dearth of Imran's adventures to be read. Must I learn to read Urdu? Or will enterprising publishers get to work on providing more translations of Safi's work in order to satisfy the powerful craving of his readers for additional volumes?
